And So we "Partcipated" at the Olympics
Nigerians will not wound person... After recieving for the umpteenth time the viral broadcast on BB about the various medals won at the Olympics under different Leaders, I just about had it. Making matters worse was when I stumbled on a good friend's post on how he would like to offer a scented sacrifice to Abacha's memory for the stellar performance of our athletes during his administration. All I could do is go hmmmmm.... Anyway it all doesn't come as a surprise not when we are in the season of "Who can insult GEJ the best". I however urge us to stop for a moment and think.
Look at reruns of the just concluded olympics which of the international athletes that performed up to expectation had only 2 years of preparation (counting from when GEJ assumed office in May 2010). While not absolving totally because he had the power to stop our contingent from attending for lack of preparedness; because the last one year could have been used to monitor that. I would like us to all accept that we as a Nation Failed. Who exactly where the athletes that went for the Olympics? my friend Eugene Abels is currently doing a survey to find out who exactly were all those athletes with ground breaking records at the last National Festival and whether any was on the Nation's contingent. The military in their well known espirit de corps tradition took sports to the level it was because it was part of their lifestyle. The infrastructural decay of the Sector is a culmination of years of neglect. I make bold to say that even the Sports Minister knew it was a waste of valuable time from the get go....If we want to be at par with others lets go back to basics and scout for 3, 4 year olds and begin to groom the Ajunwas, Ogunkoyas and the Onyali's of the future..lets stop the big men from taking municipal sports grounds and converting them to prime property for their living spaces. The Kanu Nwankwos and Okochas of this world where not stuck in front of TV sets playing PS3 for hours or infront of computer screens surfing the net: they were outside daring the elements enjoying themselves in the dirt, developing their skills. How many schools have sport fields these days. Most secondary schools have become like mausoleums without a strip of land to arouse the desire for sporting activities...The environment lacks the enabling factor to give us the results we yearn for.
WE ALL HAVE TO BE OBJECTIVE AND THINK OF WAYS WE CAN CHANGE THE FORTUNES OF THIS SECTOR..because seriously no matter how much funds are injected into it an absence of athletes (the lethargic children of today) we would have a recipe for future disasters. Lets catch them young and as my brother AJ said, maybe by 2024 our toddlers of today will be the olympic champions. We should not expect a different outcome yet we do the same thing over and over again...Lets stop the finger sport of clicking and get out onto terraf firma and like the Nike ad says "Just do it"...That reminds me Milo should really go back to basics and really become the future drink of champions; time there was when most CSR's where geared towards sports. Rowe Park Yaba was the place of choice for Milo table tennis clinic and as a teen in the 80's i attended two.....Oh! My Nigeria
